Bangalore to host next edition, too: Antony - Deccan Herald

Bangalore, Feb 6, 2013, DHNS:

Just before the jets soared into the sky marking the beginning of the ninth edition of Aero India 2013, Defence Minister A K Antony said the next edition of the airshow would be also held in Bangalore.

His statement came as a relief to the State government, which had fought hard to retain the airshow in the City after Bengaluru International Airport had raised certain objections. The 2015 edition of the biennial show is scheduled between February 18-22.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, while thanking Antony for the support, said Karnataka was a great destination for an airshow, with the government focusing on the aerospace industry.

Antony, who officially declared the show open, said India had put in place a roadmap vide the new defence production policy. "We are encouraging the public sector defence companies and the private sector to achieve this in partnership," Antony said.

Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said the Airport Association of India was looking at the modernisation of 35 airports in non-metro cities in the country.

He said that in the past five years, the passenger-handling capacity had more than tripled and the government had also approved 15 more greenfield airports.

Singh also announced that India's GPS-aided geo-augmented navigation (GAGAN) system would take off in July this year.

The GAGAN system is expected to provide the much-needed relief to airline companies by knocking off close to 20 per cent of their fuel bills as well as enabling a larger number of flights, as the travel time will also be cut down using the space-based navigation.
