Traders booked for SoBo snarl - Times of India

MUMBAI: Multiple police cases have been registered against the traders who led Wednesday's car rally across south Mumbai in protest against the local body tax. They have been charged with unlawful assembly and obstruction of traffic. This comes a day before Friday's 'maha morcha' in which 50,000 traders from acrosss the state will march from Carnac Bunder to Azad Maidan at noon. DCP (Zone V) Sanjay Shintre and senior inspector (Shivaji Park) Suresh Unawane confirmed that cases have been registered at Shivaji Park, Tardeo and D B Marg police stations. Mohan Gurnani, president of FAM ( Federation of Associations of Maharashtra) that had organized the rally, said he was yet to hear from the authorities about the cases. FAM has invited businessmen across the state to march fro m Carnac Bunder to Azad Maidan at noon Friday. Among the participants are merchants affiliated to the Darukhana Iron Steel and Scrap Merchants Association (DISMA). "We are not opposed to paying even 5.5% value added tax (VAT), up from the already raised 5%. We object to the new window of harassment and corruption that LBT engenders. Every merchant will have to register afresh for LBT after already having registered for sales tax and wealth tax. Small businessmen who earn over Rs 3 lakh per annum, be they tea stall owners, vada pav sellers or flower vendors, will have to keep records of every sale. They will need to file monthly and quarterly returns and will have to engage chartered accountants to do so," said Pradeep Sureka, managing committee member, DISMA. "We are taking up for the common man as well.
