| The BSE Sensex closed off the day's high reflecting the lack of conviction in markets. The Sensex closed 85 points higher at 19,496 after earlier rising over 200 points. The 50-share Nifty ended at 5,868, up 31 points, after hitting 5,900 in intraday trade. Both indexes closed above their respective 200 day moving averages for a second day. The rupee continued to weigh on sentiments. There were reports of Reserve Bank selling dollars after the rupee hit a low of 60.59 today. Gains were led by tobacco major ITC, which rose 1.1 per cent after raising prices for one of its cigarette brands. Hindustan Unilever closed 1.3 per cent higher after earlier hitting an all-time high of Rs 632. HUL's parent company Unilever said it had acquired a little over two-thirds of the Indian unit, less than the total amount it had offered to buy in the voluntary tender offer. United Spirits shares closed 1 per cent lower at Rs 2,531.70 after e arlier hitting a record high of Rs 2,625.95. Global drinks firm Diageo said on Thursday it completed a share offering that failed to attract enough investors given the low offer price.
