Trinamool Congress not in favour of ordinance on Food Security Bill - Daily News & Analysis

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dinesh Trivedi on Thursday lashed out at the Congress-led UPA government for going ahead with the Food Security Bill, and said that the ordinance did not take into account the needs of the poor, disabled and the elderly.

"Single women who are poor, disabled, old women, old men, I don't think so all these things have been taken into consideration," he said.

The government on Wednesday decided to promulgate an ordinance to give the country's two-third population the right to 5 kg of foodgrain every month at highly subsidised rates of Rs1-3 per kg.

The ordinance, will come into effect after President Pranab Mukherjee signs it.

The Union Cabinet, which had last month deferred a decision on the issue, approved promulgating an ordinance to implement the Food Security Bill.

Even after the ordinance, the Bill will have to be approved by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
