Small towns to have more than 100 airports: PM - Hindustan Times

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that small destinations in the country will have air connectivity with a network of more than 100 airports. This will help in meeting the estimated passenger load capacity of 30 crore by 2020.

The first airport is expected to come up in Kishangarh town in Ajmer district. Singh laid the foundation stone for the development of the airport, scheduled to be operational by 2016.

"The focus earlier was on developing airports in metro cities and now more than 100 airports will be set up in small towns and cities," Singh said in Ajmer, adding that Kishangarh airport would be the first project under this scheme. The estimated cost for the airport is Rs. 161 crore in the first phase. The setting up of the airport would boost economic activities and growth in the area.

"Ajmer is not only a noted religious town, it also known for industries including that of marble, and the new airport project will push its economic growth," the Prime Minister said.
