Express News Service : Chandigarh, Sun Sep 22 2013, 01:29 hrs Domestic Gas (LPG) will be sold at the market price of Rs 955 from January 1, 2014 with the subsidy directly transferred to the bank accounts of the consumers, Satyagopal, Secretary of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs said Saturday. While reviewing the preparedness of the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG Consumer (DBTL), the UT Administration has observed that although 80 per cent of LPG consumers in the city have an Aadhaar number, the seeding of Aadhaar numbers with gas agencies is a mere 37 per cent, and with banks it is only 9 per cent, Satyagopal emphasised on the need for an aggressive public awareness programme. Satyagopal said that apart from advertisements in the newspapers, the oil companies should create awareness among the public with the help of hoarding and banners. He also urged the UIDAI to continue sending mobile phone messages to consumers and banks to insure that Aadhaar number received by the banks is seeded within 24 hours of its reception. He added that a review meeting to assess the progress of the implementation will be held before the end of the month. "Our aim is to bring all the consumers under the scheme so that they get the advanced subsidies in their bank accounts," he said. He further stated that in order to avail the subsidy, the beneficiaries must give their copy of Aadhaar number to the oil marketing companies (OMCs) who in turn will directly transfer the money to the beneficiaries' account. All LPG consumers who have not linked their Aadhaar number to LPG consumer number and their bank accounts will have a grace period of three months after the launch of the scheme. During this period, they will continue to get the LPG cylinders at a subsidised rate as they are getting currently, up to the cap of nine cylinders. ... contd.
