Amid slackening overseas operations dragging down its profits, Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal on Tuesday added teeth to his professional managers by setting up a new Bharti Governance Board (BGB) from April.
The board apart from Mittal himself will include Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Rajan Bharti Mittal and Akhil Gupta as vice-chairmen and Manoj Kohli as managing director. It will also consist of Sarvajit Singh Dhillon, Group CFO; Deven Khanna director, chairman's office; Inder Walia, group director, HR and Mukesh Bhavnani, director, group council.
"The new structure reflects the next phase of Bharti's growth journey… this is another step towards transforming the group from entrepreneur-led professional-backed to a professional-led entrepreneur-backed one," said Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman, Bharti Enterprises.
The company also announced a major reshuffle at the top.
After heading Airtel's Africa operations, Manoj Kohli will now lead the group's non-telecom businesses including retail, insurance, food & agri, realty and other non-listed ventures as managing director, Bharti Enterprises, a new post created in the group.
A day before announcing its third-quarter results, the Bharti group also appointed Gopal Vittal as managing director and CEO, India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel, within a year of his elevation as joint managing director and CEO, India operations, in the company. Bharti Airtel's Bangladesh and Sri Lanka operations are being brought back under South Asia operations.
Bharti Infratel CEO D S Rawat has been made managing director and CEO of the company. Vittal and Rawat will work with an empowered group of professionals and management bodies in decisions taken by respective Boards of these two listed companies.
To boost its telecom tower business, the company appointed Akhil Gupta as chairman of Bharti Infratel and vice-chairman of Bharti Enterprises. He will serve on other Bharti boards. DS Rawat will also be on the Board of Bharti Infratel.
