"If the demands of the union were somewhat preposterous the last time in June 2013, they are entirely insane this time around," Rajiv said the statement.
The demands of the union include hike in wages, reinstatement of sacked workers, allocation of funds for tribal development from the CSR spends, setting up a museum in the name of the company's founder and allotment of shares at a discounted rate.
"It seems to me that with some of the irresponsible union leaders and members, the management is guilty of sparing the rod and spoiling the child," Rajiv said.The message that goes on to state the company's stand quite unequivocally said: "We will be certain not to repeat that error while taking all possible care to ensure the safety of the majority of our colleagues who wish to continue to work, as also the continuity of production so as to protect the interests of our customers, dealers, and suppliers."
This is not the first time that Bajaj Auto's Chakan plant has seen labour problems. Last year, the plant saw 50 days agitation led by VKKS (Vishwa Kalyan Kamgar Sanghatana), an internal union, and its president, Dilip Pawar.
The current crisis has been going on for well over a month. In February, the agitation led to a fast by the union which rejected the management's wage hike proposals.
The Chakan belt has factories by some well-known names in the auto industry, including General Motors, Volkswagen and Mahindra & Mahindra.
