Glenmark recalls 2900 bottles of ulcer drug in US

With India supplying about 40 percent of generic and over-the-counter drugs sold in the United States, drugs manufactured in India have come under increased scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the past year.

In the latest move, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd has issued a recall for 2,900 bottles of its stomach ulcer drug Ranitidine in the United States after a foreign tablet was found in one of the bottles. The recall came into effect on March 18.

A Glenmark representative was quoted as saying:"Corrective actions have been implemented and the recall is limited to only one lot of material. Financially, the impact of the recall is very insignificant."

Many products made by some of India's largest drugmakers, including Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd have been recalled from the United States in last six mo nths.

According to information posted by the FDA on its website on Thursday, the lot being recalled was manufactured for Glenmark by another Indian drugmaker Shasun Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The foreign tablet that has been found in one of the bottles has been identified as metoprolol tartrate, a drug to treat high blood pressure.
