The price of petrol was on Tuesday cut by 70 paise per litre - the second reduction in six months. The prices of diesel were left unchanged.
The reduction, effective midnight, excludes local sales tax or VAT and the actual cut will be higher, varying from city to city.
The price of petrol was last cut by 75 paise on March 31.
The rupee, which plays an important role in determining duel prices, ended lower at 60.23 per dollar on Tuesday against Friday's close of 60.17. Currency markets were closed on Monday.
Since January 2013, diesel rates have risen by Rs 8.33 over 14 monthly installments.
