Sensex regains 28K-level on sustained FII buying; oil & gas stocks steal the show - Hindu Business Line

Mumbai, March 31:

The benchmark BSE Sensex regained the 28,000-mark by rising over 90 points in the opening session of the last day of the financial year amid a firm trend in the global markets.

At 10.15 a.m. local time, the 30-share BSE index Sensex was trading higher by 80.86 points or 0.29 per cent at 28,056.72.

Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty also reclaimed the 8,500-level by jumping 21.7 points or 0.26 per cent at 8,514.

Brokers said sustained buying by foreign funds and retail investors, triggered by a firm trend in other Asian markets after China's decision to ease the mortgage rules fuelled hopes for further stimulus measures, and overnight rally in US markets, helped the key indices to regained their crucial levels.

Besides, the RBI allowing banks to utilise up to 50 per cent of their provisioning buffer towards making specific provisions for bad loans or non-performing assets against the earlier 33 per cent, influenced the trading sentiment, they added.

Among BSE sectoral indices, oil & gas index was the star-performer and was up 2.00 per cent, followed by PSU 0.88 per cent, metal 0.81 per cent and infrastructure 0.7 per cent, while banking index was down 0.23 per cent.

Top five Sensex gainers were SSLT 2.38%, Dr Reddy's 2.08%, Tata Power 1.95%, Reliance 1.91% and HUL1.79%, while the major losers were NTPC 1.46%, Bajaj Auto 0.68%, HDFC Bank 0.54%, ITC 0.46% and Axis Bank 0.33%.

Asian stocks headed for their biggest quarterly advance since 2012 and the dollar strengthened against most peers amid speculation that central bank stimulus globally will continue to support asset prices.

The MSCI Asia-Pacific Index rose 0.3 per cent by 12:27 p.m. in Tokyo, heading for a 6.6 per cent advance over the past three months.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 1.49 per cent higher in yesterday's trade.
