LG India Eyes Bigger Smartphone Pie - Light Reading India

LG Electronics India aims to improve its market share with the introduction of newly adopted strategy and new products in 2013.

The Indian smartphone market is being dominated by Samsung, Micromax and Sony. South Korean smartphone vendor LG presently possesses 2 percent of the Indian smartphone market share, which its aims to take to 6 percent by the end of this year and 10 percent by the end of 2014.

LG India plans to roll-out its flagship Optimus G Pro smartphone by the end of June this year. The company claims that the sales of its flagship Optimus G Pro smartphones reached 500,000 units within 40 days of launch in South Korea. LG will also be rolling-out Optimus Vu2 smartphone to strengthen its mid-range portfolio.

Swoon Kwon, Managing Director at LG Electronics India said, "We want to further strengthen our business with a target of 20 percent overall growth in 2013. As India is a strategic market for LG, we strive to introduce Global flagship products as well as India Insight products, designed especially for the Indian market."

Once a laggard in the smartphone industry, LG is now set to vie neck-to-neck with global market incumbents like Samsung, HTC and Apple with its Optimus smartphone range.

Kwon reckons that smartphones sales will contribute a majority to its revenues growth in 2013.

With its Optimus G Pro, the company will be competing with Sony's Xperia Z and Samsung's Galaxy S4. One of the company officials said that the price of LG's flagship device will be lower than the prices of Xperia Z and Galaxy S4.

The Optimus G Pro features 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display and runs on Android Jelly Bean. Equipped with 1.7 Ghz quad-core snapdragon processor and 2GB RAM, the device offers the largest battery capacity in its class at 3,140mAh. It has an upgraded 13 megapixel camera on the back with LED flash and 2.1-inch front-facing cam. It has 32GB of internal storage, further expandable up to 64GB.

The company showcased its complete smartphone portfolio at an event in Delhi recently. While most of the devices were equipped with 4G LTE capability, the company official said that 4G LTE variants would not be available in India in near future, due to underdeveloped ecosystem and pricing factor.
