Sensex, Nifty end at six-week highs, Jet Airways up 10%

A sudden spurt of buying in the last 30 minutes of trade sent the markets to a six-week high as rate cut hopes continued to boost rate-sensitive sectors though technology stocks saw further selling.

The 30-share BSE index ended at 19,397.67, up 218 points, or 1.1 per cent, a level last seen on March 15. The 50-share NSE Nifty gained 79.4 points to close at 5,916.30, its highest level since March 11.

 
On the Sensex, Tata Motors (4.66 per cent) was the biggest gainer, followed by Dr Reddy's (4.48 per cent), which hit a 52-week high of Rs 1,999.4, NTPC (4.29 per cent), Maruti Suzuki (3.43 per cent) and Sun Pharma (3 per cent).
 
Wipro (2.04 per cent), TCS (2 per cent), Infosys (1.55 per cent), Hindustan Unilever (0.8 per cent), Jindal Steel & Power (0.67 per cent) and ONGC (0.28 per cent) were the laggards.
 
Jet Airways shares closed 10 per cent higher after rising nearly 20 per cent earlier following the announcement of its deal with Etihad Airways.
