Sharon Barnhardt from Boston, USA, joined the Public Systems group at the Indian Institute of Mangement, Ahmedabad, (IIM-A) as a full-time faculty member in August this year.
Barnhardt is among eight people recruited by IIM-A this year. His recruitment may well be among the many this B-school plans on hiring in its bid to be globally recognised.
Recently, as IIMA's flagship course Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP) figured in the list of top 20 institutes across the globe in the Financial Times'-Masters in Management-2013 ranking, its position (18th) showed that the course has slipped down eight rungs in 2013 in areas like international faculty, international students, share of international members on board and share of female students.
Even as engineers form 95 per cent of the the PGP programme's class composition, there has now been a move to bring in more diversity in the admission process. Apart from one's CAT performance, IIMA also uses academic background of the student for short-listing for WA-PI (Written Analysis and Personal Interviews), which is the first step for admissions process.
Ashish Nanda, the institute's new Director on Saturday said, "Our goal is to select the best students and while we are not 'ranking-driven', we cannot be blind to them. We have been more 'domestic' and 'archaic' in our perspective and need to be more 'global'. The first step would be to recruit top-quality faculty...We do take into account the composition of class in the admission criteria and try to have a good mix of people. We encourage people from different experiences and diversity in IIM-A."
