Kanhoji Angre lighthouse, nine nautical miles away from the Gateway of India is set to get a facelift as part of a tourism project. Work on the lighthouse will include building of a viewing gallery, reconstruction of the fort wall, tents, construction of a jetty and a passenger terminal. The lighthouse is a 90-minute ferry ride from Mumbai. The first phase of the project is due for completion by next September and will cost Rs47 crore.

The move was announced by Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi and Minister of State (Shipping) Milind Deora on Saturday. This is part of a pilot project that will also include Dolphin's Nose lighthouse in Vishakhapatnam and Mahabalipuram lighthouse in Chennai The success of this pilot project will decide the fate of the other 12 lighthouses in the country.

K Chiranjeevi said that his ministry has  begun applying for required permissions for the development. "Most of the lighthouses in the country are located at remote locations which are tough to access but abound in natural beauty and serenity. This is ideal for leisure tourism."

Kanhoji Angre lighthouse, named after the famous Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre is situated on an island of the same name. Kanhoji Angre took command of the Maratha Navy in 1708 and won numerous sea battles till his death in 1729.
