New Delhi: Following the government decision to raise commission paid to petrol pump dealers and firming global oil rates, the price of petrol was hiked by 41 paise per litre and diesel price by 10 paise per litre today. The two increases, which are exclusive of local sales tax or VAT will be effective from midnight tonight.
Despite the weakening of the rupee against the US dollar, state-owned oil firms had restrained themselves from revising petrol and diesel prices for the past seven weeks, but made use of the government decision to hike the dealer commission on petrol by 21 paise to effect another increase in 20 paise.
After the increase in prices of both petrol and diesel, the price in petrol in Delhi will rise to Rs 71.50 from Rs 71.02 per litre, while the price of diesel will see a marginal rise from Rs 53.67 a litre to Rs 53.80 per litre.
This is the 18th time, the people in Delhi will get to experience the hike in petrol prices though the actual rates in the prices of petrol and diesel will vary from city to city. The last hike in petrol rates was on November 1, 2013.

While the beginning of the year 2013 saw a reduction in price of petrol, the fuel witnessed a hike in its price till March 2013 after which the price in petrol dropped to as low as Rs 63.09 on May 1, 2013. The next phase showed a constant rise in petrol price till October 1, 2013 when price stabilized at Rs 72.4 per litre. Ahead of the assembly elections, the price of petrol was decreased till December 22 after which the commuters pays an extra 41 paise for consumption of the fuel.
