Wiping off its Monday gains, the Indian rupee on Tuesday fell by 15 paise to 61.88 against the US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market following appreciation of the American unit against other currencies overseas.
Dealers attributed the rupee's fall to dollar gains against yen as expectations grow that the Fed will announce a cut in its stimulus programme after its two-day meeting, but a higher opening of the domestic equity market capped the losses.
The rupee had gained 39 paise to close at 61.73 against the dollar in Monday's trade.
Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex was up by 93.51 points, or 0.45 per cent, at 20,753.03 in early trade on Tuesday.
