Thane bridge to stay shut for three months - Times of India

MUMBAI: The old Versova bridge, which had developed cracks, was completely closed down on Wednesday.

The key link that connects Thane to National Highway 8 will remain shut for the next three months due to repair work.

Vehicular movement on the bridge, which is a link for motorists commuting between Thane and Gujarat, will be severely hit, said an expert. "The old bridge was used by motorists heading from Thane towards Ahmedabad, while the new bridge is used for those headed from Ahmedabad to Thane. Since the old bridge has been closed for repair, traffic in both directions will now ply on the new bridge. Commuters will have to brace for snarls," said superintendent of police (Thane rural) Anil Kumbhar. A posse of policemen and traffic constables has been deployed on the stretch. "Heavy mot or vehicles will be diverted on the Wada-Manor Road and Bhiwandi-Wada Road. They could also use the Chinchoti-Anjur Phata Road to reach Thane. We want to appeal to people not to travel towards the highway unless necessary and use public transport instead of private vehicles," he added. Experts from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had inspected the bridge. "A girder has developed cracks in the old bridge and the entire span will have to be replaced," an NHAI official said.
