The carrier announced a 'Second Chance' 30% discount on tickets booked 30 days in advance till April 15 on all domestic flights. SpiceJet said passengers could purchase the discount tickets till midnight on Sunday, February 2.
The announcement appeared to prompt fellow-low cost carrier and market-share leader IndiGo to immediately come up with a similar offer.
GoAir, Jet Airways and Jet Konnect followed suit with similar discounts on advance purchases. The fare war is likely to keep the cost of air travel low at least in the near future. The fare wars have been sparked in part by the imminent arrival of Air Asia India, which has promised to offer the cheapest domestic fares once it starts operations in the country, industry watchers said. SpiceJet's previous 50% discount offer on purchase of tickets in advance was an overwhelming success and forced IndiGo, GoAir and Air India to slash their fares too.
With its current offer, a SpiceJet Delhi-Mumbai flight that would normally cost 10,098 on purchase just prior to travel can be had for just 3,617 inclusive of tax.
"Travellers who missed the discounts last week now have reason to cheer although this time it is onl y for travel on weekdays, between Monday and Thursday," MakeMyTrip CEO Rajesh Magow said.
