At 12:40 p.m.; the 30-share index was at 20,543.07, up 44.82 points, or 0.22 per cent. It touched a high of 20,572.32 and a low of 20,455.05 in trade today.
The Nifty was at 6,092.05, up 18.35 points or 0.30 per cent. It touched a high of 6,097.30 and a low of 6,068.35 in trade today.
The S&P BSE Midcap Index was up 1.12 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index was 1.16 per cent higher.
Among the sectoral indices, the S&P BSE Realty Index was up 1.78 per cent, the S&P BSE IT Index gained 1.24 per cent and the S&P BSE Metal Index advanced 1.29 per cent.
The S&P BSE Auto Index was down 0.54 per cent.
Tata Steel (up 2.64 per cent), M&M (up 2.61 per cent), Tata Power (up 2.08 per cent), TCS (up 1.85 per cent) and GAIL (1.77 per cent) were among the index gainers.
Tata Motors (3.02 per cent), HDFC (2.07 per cent), NTPC (1.91 per cent), Hero MotoCorp (1.49 per cent) were among the major Sensex losers.
Hero MotoCorp was down on profit booking after its profit growth remained muted in the quarter to December despite record sales because of currency fluctuations and higher cost of metals.
The Delhi-based company said net profit rose a marginal 7.5 per cent year-on-year to Rs 525 crore for the quarter ended December 31. Sales grew 7 per cent to 16.80 lakh units, the highest for any quarter.
Hero MotoCorp reported lower-than-expected results on the bottom-line front led by EBITDA margin pressures due to unfavorable currency movement and also due to increase in advertising and promotional expenses.
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 882 gainers against 411 losers.
Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 430.2 crore while domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 132.01 crore on Thursday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
