Work will begin soon on the proposed rail coach factory in Kolar with the state government and the railways signing an MoU to establish it, Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises K H Muniyappa said here on Thursday

He said: "The state has agreed to give 1,100 acres for the project. As the government already has 550 acres near Srinivaspura, the work can be started anytime in the near future. The coach factory would be established at a cost of `1,460 crore and the state has agreed to fund 50 per cent of the project cost."

He said this would be the fourth coach factory in the country and the other three are at Chennai, Kapurtala and Raebareli. It would produce 500 coaches annually in the first phase and an additional 500 coaches in the next phase. The factory will also house a research centre. He said most of the non-technical jobs would be given to the locals.
