Auto sales continue downhill ride; Ford, Honda move up - Indian Express

Summary

The decline in demand for diesel-powered models took its toll on M&M, Tata Motors and Toyota Kirloskar with strong portfolio of diesel products.

The auto sector in the country continued to struggle with declining sales with the leading auto companies reporting a drop in sales of around 5 per cent in January as compared to the same month last year.

Seven of the country's big automobile manufacturers together sold 1,94,070 passenger vehicles last month, a decline of 4.8 per cent from 2,03,934 units sold in January 2013. Good news, however, came from Ford India and Honda Cars India, who posted double digit growth during the month.

Volumes in the industry were pulled down with largest companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors all reporting a decline in sales number. Maruti Suzuki registered a sales decline of 6.3 per cent and sold 96,569 units last month. While sales of entry-level models M800, Alto, WagonR, A-Star and WagonR went down by 17 per cent to 38,565 units, demand in the utility vehicle segment also took a hit of 21.9 per cent.

Sales of DZire offered some respite to the company growing by 12.7 per cent to 19,232 units. Hyundai too faced the onslaught of a sluggish market with domestic sales falling by 2.6 per cent to 33,405 units.  The decline in demand for diesel-powered models took its toll on M&M, Tata Motors and Toyota Kirloskar with strong portfolio of diesel products. Sales from Mahindra & Mahindra stable dropped by 25.5 per cent to 19,792 units last month.

Tata Motors continued its drop with monthly volumes dipping by 27.8 per cent to 10,974 units. Sales for Toyota fell by around 18 per cent to 10,910 units. On the contrary, Honda Cars India and Ford India, with new products like Amaze, new City and EcoSport, reported growth in sales during the month.  While sales for Honda Cars India nearly trebled to 15,714 units, those of Ford India went up by 10.6 per cent to 6,706 units.
