Sensex up 50 points; Infosys, Tata Motors top gainers - Hindu Business Line

Mumbai, Feb 25:   Indian equities, the Sensex and the Nifty, were trading up by about 0.2 per cent in the pre-noon session on Monday on buying by funds and retail investors in select stocks amid firm Asian cues. Domestic players remained cautious ahead of the Railway Budget, Economic Survey and Union Budget this week. At 11.50 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 49.72 points (0.26 per cent) at 19,366.73 and the Nifty was trading up 13.6 points (0.23 per cent) at 5,863.90. Volume toppers were Infosys, SBI, RIL, L&T and Tata Motors. Top five Sensex gainers were Infosys, Tata Motors, Wipro, TCS and BHEL, while the top five losers were Cipla, Coal India, ONGC, Dr. Reddy's and RIL. The Nifty and the Sensex opened marginally in the green led by banking and financial services scrips. The Nifty opened 21 points up at 5,871, while the Sensex opened at 19,365, up 48 points. "Investors will keep a close eye on NBFCs which may react positively after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the much-awaited guidelines on the licensing for new banks. Any positive news from the Budget session would reverse the market sentiment," said Prashant Tapse of Mehta Equities. Globally, markets are pondering whether Italy's week-end elections will produce a stable government, and the implications of that for euro zone cohesion, while Moody's credit downgrade on Britain will play on confidence in the pound and government bonds. Investors also await testimony on Tuesday from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke for further clues of when the Fed may slow or stop buying bonds.
