CoalMin grants 14 blocks to PSU power cos - Daily News & Analysis

In the first captive coal block allocations in nearly three years, the coal ministry on Wednesday gave away 14 blocks to state-owned power companies on the recommendation of an inter-ministerial committee. The blocks, located in six states, have geological reserves of 8.311 billion tonne with a production capacity of around 159 million tonne per annum (mtpa) and will cater to about 31,800 mw power generation capacity. Around 15 state and six central public sector undertakings have been allocated the blocks. "Some of the coal blocks, because of their size, had to be given to more than one state. Namely, Deocha-Pachami block in West Bengal, having a reserve of 2,102 mt, has been given to six different state power PSUs," a ministry release said. The ministry had invited proposals for allocation of captive coal blocks in December last year. It  received 235 complete applications, of which 128 were considered eligible for the 14 blocks. NTPC, the largest power generator in the country, got four coal blocks with aggregate reserves of 1,995 mt -- the Bhalumuda and Banai blocks in Chhattisgarh and Chandrabila in Odisha, besides the Kudanali-Luburi block in Odisha which it won jointly with Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corp. Neyveli Lignite Corp has bagged two blocks. It has received the Jilga-Barpali coal block in Chhattisgarh jointly with Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Co, while its joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam has won the Pachwara-South block in Jharkhand. The single largest block, with reserves of 1,234 mt, however, went to Odisha Thermal Power Corporation.
