The rupee fell by 40 paise to 62.91 against the dollar in early trade on Monday, ahead of the June quarter current account deficit data, amid month-end demand for the American currency from oil importers.
Besides, euro's weakness against the US dollar overseas and a lower opening in the domestic equity market also put pressure on the local currency, forex dealers said.
Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 142.04 points, or 0.72%, to 19,585.23.
It had dropped from a one-week high by falling 44 paise to close at 62.51 against the dollar in the previous session.
